For the blogs first post I would like to explain the purpose of this blog and why I am writing it.
During this past summer I was fortunate enough to be able to attend many of the industry top conferences including the Seeley Conference, OFA Short Course, and the Independent Garden Center Show. While I learned a lot of exciting things about the industry I also discovered another thing that the industry is in need of a change. While attending the Independent Garden Center show in Chicago, in one of Judy Sharpton’s seminars she noted that the modern garden center was invented in the 1960s! This made me wonder of how will survive in coming generations without adaption, especially now that the Baby Boomers are getting older and Generation X and Y will becoming our primary consumers, who have much different shopping habits. Gen X and Gen Y have much less patience then Baby Boomers especially when it comes to shopping and will be much more environmentally conscience than generations past.
As a member of the Generation Y the future of this industry is of great concern to me. I am creating this blog to explore what has happened to this industry, the current state, and where we think we are going. Many topics will be discussed on this blog including economic, sustainability, politics and more. I would like to hear your opinion of the future of the green industry and any topics you would like to discuss.
Thank you,
Pat
